The Mural @ PDX
PDX is very excited to be working with the Read Aloud
Chattanooga program to train dogs to assist in literacy programs for
kids. The premise is simple: kids read to dogs, and start to associate
all the great things about dogs with reading. The dogs have a great time
being the center of attention, the kids relax and have fun reading to an
uncritical and loving audience. Those of us with therapy reading dogs
have a great time watching children bloom, and get a lot of satisfaction
in being able to contribute in a way that touches two important aspects
of our lives: dogs and reading. The nice people at Read Aloud
Chattanooga commissioned this awesome mural by Gail Hinton for our
training facility. Hopefully lots of folks will see it and get inspired
to join in. Characteristics of a good reading dog: calm, enjoys
children, willing to settle, free time to spend in new and exotic places
like schools, churches, and libraries, able to handle a variety of
situations with confidence and restraint. If you’re interested, you can
get started by taking the Canine Good Citizen and
Therapy Dogs International test. If you want to brush up before
taking the test, we offer
classes about every other month. Click to see a larger
