Making Of PDX The Kennel

PDX the Dog Daycare and Training Center had been going strong since December of 2004, but we realized that we were missing a big opportunity and doing our customers a disservice by not offering boarding. The dogs love it here, they're comfortable with the facility and staff, and they have many canine friends to keep them occupied. So we needed to build them a place to stay when their human families were off to parts unknown. Needed it badly! After years of planning, a few disappointing setbacks, and a lot of perseverance, it's finally happening -- PDX The Kennel will be ready for prime time on June 2nd, 2008. Here's how it's going:

May 1: Mats have been removed from a 17x60 area at the back of the arena. This frame went up in one day!

Angie and her dad, Bill Jennings, discuss several knotty technical problems before the drywall goes up. Something about measuring twice...

Mic and Cris trying out the newly defined kennel space. They approve of the effort, but note there is much to be done.

May 2: Ray, James, and Jo arrive to hang sheetrock. Special acoustical insulation is used to minimize external noise so the boarders can rest easy.

Almost done! The 12-foot walls are now completely enclosed. Over 1,000 square feet are now ready to be finished.

The sheet rock was hung on the kennel with care...

Getting ready for the new ventilation and lighting systems.

Happily, there's plenty of electricity back from the days when PDX was a skating rink. Sadly, the wires were all in the wrong place...

The kennel now has its own climate control and lighting systems.

Angie is tugging on her new door. She's a happy girl.

This is Angie's dad, Bill, who installed the door so Angie could be a happy girl. He's proud.

While all this is going on, we're interviewing for daycare and kennel positions. Talulah is out for Be's job!

May 9: The kennels are here! The kennels are here! How in the world are we going to get them out of this truck?!

Jodi and Kayla leading the unloading effort.

Mark and Billy join in.

Julie, Kayla, Angie, and Billy unloading piece by piece. Many calories were left behind this day.

Julie reports on the day's events to Nancy, who was in Perry, Georgia showing off with Kruzer.

Andrea and Angie paint the inside walls.

Nancy Cambron painted the outside walls. Cris approves.

Cris & Cate model in front of Shawn's sign.

40 kennel doors + 42 panels + 5 boxes + poles & rails & bolts & nuts. Sure hope someone knows how to put all this together!

May 17: there's a hole in the wall! One day, this will be a door for easy access to the arena. Right now, it's just a plugged-up hole.

PDX the Sign

May 16: PDX the New and Improved Sign! Installed, but no electricity just yet.
